When should I schedule my in-home newborn session
I recommend that you schedule your newborn session PRIOR to your baby’s birth to ensure a spot on our calendar. Contact me during your second trimester and let me know your estimated due date. I will keep you tentatively scheduled for 1 week before and 2 weeks after your due date.
Then, shoot me an email soon after you deliver so we can arrange a time for the session.(And I always feel super special when dad’s put me on the official “baby is here!” call list! Just sayin’…)

When to have your session
Newborn sessions can happen anytime within the first 4 weeks of life. For lifestyle sessions I find that after the first 14 days usually works the best . Since my style is much more of a relaxed "fly on the wall" approach there is a little more leeway as opposed to fully posed newborn sessions.

Where will your session take place
The majority of my newborn sessions take place in your home. If the weather is warm enough and you’re comfortable with the idea, we can take the session outdoors. (sweet little babes in a big open field, can anyone say SWOON) My main requirement for in-home newborn sessions is that you do not worry about fully cleaning your house. You just had a baby (and I've been there, TWICE) I know how little energy I had especially when it came to cleaning. In fact, I absolutely expect a little clutter. I will shoot around any clutter and I am happy to move anything out of the way that I need moved. If you know you want full room shots go ahead and hide any clutter in in the closets but that is about all I expect you to do.  In, fact I will more than likely be moving furniture to get those perfect shots. I usually shoot in the nursery, master bed room, and any other room that has the best natural light

Ok, maybe just make the bed
There usually is a point during your session where I will recommend that we take some shots in the master bedroom. I mean, what is cuter than an adorable babe all snuggled up on mom and dad's bed. If that’s something that appeals to you, make the bed, just this once.

A solid blanket/comforter (or something that isn’t TOO busy is best.) I do have a special place in my heart for heirloom or any blanket that holds special meaning for your family. Make sure you have those set aside if you know you want to use them.

Natural light
What I will ask you to do is open all of the blinds and curtains in your home prior to my arrival. This enables me to find the best source of natural light in your home, For this reason, sessions are normally done mid-morning to late-afternoon when window lighting is as its best.

What About Posing?

I try to incorporate a couple of basic posed images of the little babe during our time together if they are up for it but most if not all of your gallery will be filled with candid (in-between moments) These times with a new baby are so precious that I want to focus on those little moments that make your story so special.

Helpful tips
I recommend that you keep your home a bit warmer than normal during the session. Newborns are used to being all bundled up,warm + cozy. Turning up the heat 30 minutes before I arrive to ensure that it’s warm enough in time for your session.

A well fed baby is a happy baby! Please feed and burp baby right before our session to ensure a happy, sleepy baby. We will also be more than happy to take as many breaks as needed to help him/her re-fuel. It’s tough work being a model. If you would like some beautiful and tasteful feeding images please let me know and I will make sure we set aside a special time for that.

Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 1-3 hours. It all depends on baby’s mood. Preparing yourself and your family to spend this amount of time on you session makes things go so much more smoothly.

Relax and have fun
Let me say it again… Relaxxx!
I may be here as the photographer but I am a mama first and foremost, I know how stressful this time can be. So while I am working one-on-one with your little babe feel free to rest quickly, or jump in the shower, or whatever else you may need to do before/after the family shots.
In case you skimmed over that last one...
Moms tend to stress out because this is a new experience…Remember that your little one can sense your stress. So just sit back and relax. We will let baby lead us in how the session goes. Prepare yourself that there is no “perfect” newborn session. Each is as unique as your sweet babe is. Let me stress about the getting those good shots. That's what I am paid to do.

I like to keep props to an absolute minimum. I think the honest and organic moments are the most special. I will bring a blanket or two but that is it. I am always open to seeing what props you might like to have at your session. If you have any family heirlooms, toys, hats, props, etc. that you would like me to use in your session, please let me know before your session so I can plan accordingly. If you do choose to use props I do recommend that they are simple (no huge headbands) so that they do not distract from that adorable babe of yours.

Safety first
Your baby’s safety comes first! If there is ever a point where you become uncomfortable, just let me know! We take every measure to ensure that your baby is never in any danger. For that reason, I will always make sure that a parent or assistant is nearby to lend support if needed.

What to wear
I know! You just had a baby and aren’t feeling your best. But I think this is the perfect time to pamper yourself!
Go have your hair + makeup done (or better yet, have someone come to you!), schedule a massage or have your nails done. If that's not possible that's ok too. Just do your best to take care of yourself first! And feel free to tell your husbands that I'm making you if they need a little convincing!
As far as clothing? Keep it simple. Neutrals are a favorite of mine but feel free to throw in a little color if you’d like, I recommend skipping the busy patterns. (And please don’t match everyone in white shirts and jeans – there’s simple…and then there’s boring!). I love delicate colors and textures (think lace, or soft sweaters)
For moms, I suggest cotton knit camis and comfy knit tops.
If you need help feel free to send me photos of some of your outfits options and I will help you pick the best.

For the Dads
Your hands, and possibly even your feet, will play a major role in this session, so it’s important that you tend to them too!
Even if you aren’t planning on participating much in the session, you’ll still be handling your baby a bit, so it’s a good idea to touch up on any grooming as you normally would. You are going to have these images for a long time and I want you to feel like you look your best.
A little clothing advice? Neutrals are always a good choice for newborn sessions. Try to choose clothing that is simple (think long or short sleeve knits). Steer clear of anything with graphics or logos.

When will my images be ready?

Your images will be ready for viewing within 3 weeks from your session date. At which time I will come to your home (with a little treat) and you will get to sit back and relax as we view your gorgeous images in a slideshow set to music. After that, we’ll go over each photo in your proofing set and get down to the details. I’ll guide you through each of my collections, measure your walls for that beautiful canvas and help you hand pick your images for your boutique leather album! If you’re not quite sure what goes where, or where to even start, don’t worry! That’s why I do in person ordering sessions… it helps so much to have someone guide you through the ordering process and help showcase your images in the best way possible. Then I will help you put together your completely personalized print package to make sure you get to enjoy your beautiful images every day.
